ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTHERN (GTR)

Our Ref: BR2/0146

3rd August 2018

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTHERN (GTR)

I am sure you are aware Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has announced that Patrick Verwer is the new Managing Director.

Today I have written to Mr Verwer advising him of our long running dispute and fight to ensure that a second safety critical person remains on the train. I have informed Mr Verwer that this union and its members have been fighting to for a safe, secure and accessible railway for everyone and that retaining a second safety critical person on the network would ensure this.

As you are aware, our colleagues on Greater Anglia have been involved in a campaign of industrial action that has resulted in management accepting the need to retain the Safety Critical Guard on its network. I have informed Mr Verwer that this agreement is a great example for his company to follow and that it would be better to be constructive and work with the union in talks rather than being destructive and working against us.

I am now trying to arrange an urgent meeting with the company and have asked them to respond by no later than midday on Thursday 9th August 2018. This will allow our National Executive Committee to consider the company’s response and make a decision on any further industrial action.

I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will write to you once I have received further information on this matter.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash

General Secretary
