ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

To All SWR Guard, Commercial Guard & Train Driver Members

Our Ref: BR2/0146
13th December 2018

Dear Colleague

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY
RMT CALLS ADDITIONAL STRIKE ACTION

Following on from my correspondence dated the 7th December 2018 with regards to the above dispute, I can now advise you that I have received a letter from the Managing Director of SWR. Regrettably, this is not the response I was waiting for in relation to the points your union raised at the meeting on the 12th November and there is no mention of the issues at the heart of this dispute. However, the company has indicated that ‘there is no concerted effort by SWR to hinder discussions’ and have proposed a meeting with their Customer Experience & Human Resources Directors.

As you are fully aware, the RMT has been consistent in our approach for meaningful talks in the hope that a resolution can be achieved throughout this dispute. From day one we have made our position perfectly clear to SWR, to retain a Guard with safety responsibilities on all services. Despite your union’s best efforts, the company has repeatedly dragged their feet in bringing this matter to a speedy resolve. This recent correspondence from SWR highlights management’s lack of concern to ensure all passengers have a safe, secure and accessible railway.

Your union is willing to meet management at any time but if we are going to win this fight we need to continue putting pressure on SWR. Therefore, your union’s National Executive Committee has taken the decision to call further strike action in defence of the Guard and all our South Western Railway Guard, Commercial Guard and Train Driver members are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:

• 00.01 Hours and 23.59 Hours on Thursday 27th December 2018
• 00.01 Hours and 23.59 Hours on Monday 31st December 2018

Once again I would like to thank you and your colleagues for standing shoulder to shoulder throughout this long and difficult dispute and I urge you to continue your steadfast determination in opposing SWR plans to extend DOO by supporting the above action.

NO TO DOO
SUPPORT THE ACTION - UNITY IS STRENGTH

Best wishes.

General Secretary
