ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – ARRIVA RAIL NORTH

Our Ref: BR2/0146

15th February 2018

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – ARRIVA RAIL NORTH

I write further to my previous correspondence on the above matter and to congratulate you and your colleagues on your rock solid support you have shown the union during the recent industrial action.

As you are aware, during negotiations the union has asked the company to give us cast iron guarantees that every train will run with a conductor and that the conductor will maintain their full range of competencies to carry out the role. The company are still refusing to give us any guarantees on the Arriva Rail North contract, despite the fact we have received such assurance elsewhere within Arriva.

The company are persistently trying to block any meaningful resolution to this dispute and are not taking our concerns over DOO seriously. This is despite the recent events that took place when a train divided on its way into Leeds station.  This situation would have been catastrophic if it wasn’t for the Guard on board with the full suite of safety training. There is no doubt that if this train was DOO, with no guard on board, then this accident would have had a different outcome. If this train was DOO then who would have ensured that the passengers were safely evacuated along the track? This incident clearly highlights the need to ensure a Safety Critical Guard is on every train.

Therefore, the National Executive Committee has considered this matter and has instructed you and your colleagues to take strike action to oppose DOO and defend the Safety Critical Role of the Guard. You and your colleagues are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:-

• 0001 hours until 2359 hours on Saturday 3rd March 2018.

I have no doubt that you and your colleagues will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder and support the action. I urge you all to stand strong during this industrial action and send the company a clear message that we will not allow them to destroy the Safety Critical Role of the Guard and we will not see them put profit before passenger safety. We must stand together; defend passenger safety; defend your job and support your colleagues.

NO TO DOO
