FURTHER ACTION CALLED IN DEFENCE OF THE GUARD!

25th April 2018

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – ARRIVA RAIL NORTH

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you and your colleagues for your continued commitment and support during this dispute. The recent industrial action was widely supported and was a perfect example of how you and your colleagues are prepared to stand up against Arriva and show that the Safety Critical Role of the Guard is vital and cannot be removed.

The company have continued with their disingenuous propaganda and they continue to try and split a fully united work force by trying to cause confusion and spreading rumours whilst you and your colleagues support the picket lines. It is shameful that Arriva Rail North is still not trying to resolve this dispute. Once again, despite our numerous requests, the company have yet to agree or even respond to our proposals of arranging a tripartite meeting with the DFT, Northern and the RMT to find a resolution to this dispute. Their silence on this issue speaks a thousand words and only strengths our argument that Arriva Rail North can provide us with the guarantees we are seeking and that if the company wants, it can deploy staff “In both normal and disrupted operation on-board every train” as per their franchise agreement.

As you are aware, today marks the two year anniversary of our first dispute in defence of the Safety Critical Role of the Guard. The national demonstration today shows how serious our fight is and the strong solidarity you and your colleagues have in defending the Guard role. This dispute is one that is affecting our members up and down the country and our colleagues on other Train Operating Companies are also fighting to defend the Safety Critical Role of the Guard and to ensure the companies they work for don’t put profit before passenger safety.

Therefore, the National Executive Committee has considered this matter and believes that the only way to send the company a clear message and to force them round the table to resolve this dispute is to take further strike action. Therefore, you and your colleagues are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:-

• 0001 Hours and 2359 Hours on Wednesday 9th May 2018

Furthermore, the NEC has instructed me to arrange a meeting of our representatives to discuss the company’s proposals and to fight a way forward in this dispute. I urge you and your colleagues to continue with your magnificent support and I am sure you will continue to stand in solidarity with your colleagues. Arriva Rail North has continued to show utter contempt for the Guard role and we must send them a clear message that we will now allow them to destroy the vital Guard role that so many passengers rely on. I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will inform you of any further developments on this issue when they arise.

SAY NO TO DOO!!

SUPPORT THE ACTION!

SUPPORT YOUR UNION!

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash

General Secretary
