ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO - ARRIVA RAIL NORTH

To All Arriva Rail North Conductor, Conductor Instructor & Train Driver Members

Our Ref: BR2/0146

19th December 2018

Dear Colleague

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO - ARRIVA RAIL NORTH
RMT CALLS FURTHER STRIKE ACTION

As you are fully aware, the RMT has been consistent in our approach with ARN management for serious talks to find a settlement to this long running difficult dispute. Our position is perfectly clear. Stop pushing through DOO and guarantee us a safety critical Guard with full competencies on the trains. Despite the best efforts of your Union Representatives, management continue to treat our members, Reps and the public with disrespect by failing to enter into meaningful talks and more recently, failing to provide answers to the three very simple and specific questions your union sought clarity on.

Therefore, it is wholly apparent to your union’s National Executive Committee that Arriva Rail North has zero interest in resolving this dispute despite having the ability to now do so. Instead, management choose to continue treating our members with utter contempt and disdain. Your union’s Executive Committee find managements attitude totally deplorable and with this in mind, the Executive Committee has taken the decision to call further strike action in order to defend the safety critical role of the Guard.

Therefore, all ARN Conductor, Conductor Instructor and Train Driver members are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:-

• 00.01 Hours and 23.59 Hours on Saturday 5th January 2019
• 00.01 Hours and 23.59 Hours on Saturday 12th January 2019
• 00.01 Hours and 23.59 Hours on Saturday 19th January 2019
• 00.01 Hours and 23.59 Hours on Saturday 26th January 2019

NB: I would like to remind members that the strike action due to take place on Saturday 22nd December and Saturday 29th December 2018 remains in place.

Additionally, I am currently making the necessary arrangements for meetings to be held with our ARN members and Senior Union Representatives during the month of January 2019 to discuss the best strategy going forward to resolve the DOO dispute. I will, of course, keep you fully advised on the details once these meetings have been arranged.

Furthermore, I reiterate that the RMT are always available for meaningful talks with ARN or with both the company and Department for Transport at any time. Your union’s offer to suspend action still stands providing management give us the guarantees we are seeking.

In the meantime, I would like to congratulate you and your colleagues once again, for standing united throughout this long and difficult dispute and for supporting the strike action taken to date.

Best wishes.
