ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – ARRIVA RAIL NORTH

Our Ref: BR2/0146

22nd March 2017

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – ARRIVA RAIL NORTH

I write further to my letter dated 17th March 2017, in which I congratulated you and your colleagues on the magnificent solidarity and support shown during the recent industrial action. The picket lines were fully attended across the network and the company were sent a crystal clear message that we will defend the safety critical role of the guard and we will not back down to their irresponsible threats and blatant disregard for passenger wellbeing and safety.

We have written to Arriva Rail North management requesting a meeting take place between our organisations to try and achieve an amicable and safe resolution to this dispute. You may have seen through several media outlets the company are happy to tell the media they want to meet with us. However, they have not been forthcoming in providing any meaningful dates to meet with your union. It is disgraceful that the company feel it necessary to release misleading press statements instead of getting round the table and coming to a meaningful resolution to this dispute.

The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and following consultation with your representatives they have decided to call further strike action in order to defend the safety critical role of the guard and force the company to start taking this matter seriously. Therefore, you and your colleagues are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:-

•    0001 hours and 2359 hours on Saturday 8th April 2017

I urge you all to stand shoulder to shoulder and support the action. The company must be left in no doubt that we will not succumb to their reckless disregard for passenger safety. Arriva Rail North has made a complete mockery of the safety critical role of the guard and their careless cost cutting tactics are putting lives at risk. We must stand strong; defend passenger safety; defend your job and support your colleagues

NO TO DOO
STAND STRONG
SUPPORT THE STRIKE
Yours sincerely
