Role of the Guard & Extension of DOO – Arriva Rail North

Our Ref: BR2/0146

28th February 2017

Dear Colleague,

Role of the Guard & Extension of Doo – Arriva Rail North

I write further to my previous correspondence with regards to the above matter, in which I advised you of the latest ballot results and the company’s total disregard at addressing our concerns at the heart of this dispute.

You and your colleagues have provided the union with a phenomenal mandate for both strike action and industrial action short of a strike. The company have blatantly ignored our concerns and have tried to make a mockery of the safety critical role of the guard. It is disgraceful that rather than getting around the table and discussing our serious concerns surrounding passenger safety and the role of the guard management has continued to issue misleading propaganda. Arriva Rail North’s clear lack of concern is totally unacceptable.

The National Executive Committee has recently considered this matter and taken into consideration that little progress has been made with the company who are blatantly refusing to address our concerns. Therefore, The NEC has instructed you and your colleagues to take strike action by not booking on for any shifts that commence between the hours of:-

•    0001 hours and 2359 hours on Monday 13th March 2017

I urge you to show support and solidarity and to stand shoulder to shoulder with your colleagues during this industrial action. Arriva Rail North must be left in no doubt that we will not back down until these issues have been resolved and that we will do everything we can to defend the safety critical role of the guard.

Yours sincerely
Mick Cash
General Secretary
