ROLE OF THE GUARD AND EXTENSION OF DOO CLASS 800 TRAINS – GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY

Our Ref BR2/0146

17th May 2018

TO ALL HSS TRAIN DRIVERS AND TRAIN MANAGERS

Dear Colleagues

ROLE OF THE GUARD AND EXTENSION OF DOO CLASS 800 TRAINS – GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY

Further to previous correspondence, I write to advise you that we met with GWR on 30th April 2018 to discuss our serious concerns over the May 2018 Traincrew diagrams where Great Western Railway had withdrawn Guards from working Class 800 (IET) services from Paddington to Oxford, with the intention of these trains running as Driver Only Operation services. We made it abundantly clear to GWR that we demanded these diagrams were immediately withdrawn and that they rostered guards on all IET Class 800 trains irrespective of route or terminus station.

Regrettably GWR have failed to address our concerns and as a result the National Executive Committee has decided we have no alternative but to ballot all HSS Train Managers and Train Drivers for strike action and industrial action short of a strike. The final preparations to hold this ballot are underway and we anticipate it will open in the very near future.

I urge all members to strongly support the ballot and send GWR a clear message that we will not tolerate the further spread of DOO. The safety role of the guard is vital to passenger and railway safety and must be defended.

VOTE YES FOR ACTION

UNITY IS STRENGTH

Yours sincerely
