THE FIGHT GOES ON DESPITE DRIVERS DEAL

You may have heard by now that our sister union has accepted the pay deal sponsored by this Government and GTR that will allow more trains to run DOO. It is a shame that the solidarity previously shown has disappeared now that enough cash has been thrown to drivers.

As you know this dispute, as far as the RMT is concerned, has never been about money but about the safety of the railway and the service provided to passengers, especially those who are vulnerable.

It is a disgrace that in order to save money passengers who require assistance and where previously guaranteed a second member of staff to assist, now find that where there is no on board supervisor the driver will knowingly have to leave passengers stranded on trains and stations. In 2017 to believe that this is acceptable is frankly unbelievable.

There can be no doubt that disabled passengers, younger and older generations, passengers travelling alone and anyone else who feel vulnerable will be put at risk and treated as second class citizens, all in the name of profit.

I can assure you that this union will continue to fight for a second safety critical Guard on ALL trains, something that the travelling public support.

The National Executive Committee will be considering the matter again following the current strike action and I will keep you advised of developments.
