Role of the Guard & Extension of DOO – Southern (GTR)

Our Ref: BR2/0146

28th February 2017

Dear Colleague,

Role of the Guard & Extension of DOO – Southern (GTR)

Further to by letter of 15th February 2017, I want to congratulate you and your colleagues for the solid strike action that took place last Wednesday. Since then we wrote to the company to advise them that the NEC would be considering the future of the dispute today following on from the last talks at ACAS. We also made clear that the NEC would be considering calling further action.

With this in mind we sought discussions in advance of today to seek clarification on where things currently stand and what the company are planning into the future. In addition we have protested at what the TUC have told us was a gross misrepresentation by GTR of the proposals for Drivers at our recent talks at ACAS.

Consequently I have sought urgent talks at the highest possible level to clarify their position on what emerged at the TUC meetings. As it stands we have no clear indication of what the company’s position is on DOO since ASLEF members rejected their proposals. Without this or any willingness to talk from the company, we are left with little choice but to call more strike action in this dispute. We remain committed to a guaranteed second safety critical person on every train.

Members are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:-

•    0001 hours and 2359 hours on Monday 13th March 2017

Your solidarity and support for your union in the face of a hostile and petty management is truly incredible. Every single one of you should be proud of the stance you are taking in defence of jobs and the safety of the travelling public.

I will of course keep you fully advised of any developments as they happen.

Yours sincerely
Mick Cash
General Secretary
