RE-BALLOT FOR INDUSTRIAL ACTION
Further to my email of 23rd December 2019, firstly I would like to thank and congratulate you on the magnificent support you and your colleagues have show throughout the whole month of December. As you aware the action that you have taken has had a massive impact and despite management trying to play it down services were severely disrupted as could be seen in the news.
As a result of a problem we have had to re-issue the notice of our intention to ballot to SWR Management. Current anti-trade union legislation is draconian in nature and is in place to try and stop members taking industrial action, and we don’t want to give management any reason to challenge the ballot. It has been decided, therefore, that to be on the safe side, especially after such amazing support from you all, to re-issue the notice and change the despatch and return dates.
I am again asking you to use your vote in the current re-ballot. As you know not only is it important that we get yet another massive ‘Yes’ vote but it is very important that we get a high return as the anti-trade union legislation makes it very difficult to implement members wishes on occasion due to a low turn-out. We have had ballots returned with over 90% of members voting for a strike but because we did not reach the 50% threshold of papers returned we could not use the mandate. In some instances it was down to a handful of voting papers.
The ballot for industrial action will now opened on Thursday 9th January 2020 with a closing date of 23rd January 2020. Ballot papers have been sent to your home address and I urge you to vote ‘YES’ for STRIKE ACTION and ‘YES’ for INDUSTRIAL ACTION SHORT OF A STRIKE.
If you have not received your ballot paper by Thursday 16th January 2020 please contact the RMT Helpline on 0800 376 3706 and request a replacement voting paper. Alternatively, you may wish to contact RMT Head Office on 0207 387 4771 and ask for the Industrial Relations Department.
Furthermore, if you are aware of a colleague who has recently moved, changed job roles or workplace location, please ask them to contact the Union on one of the above numbers.
I will, of course, continue to keep you fully updated on any further developments.
