STRIKE ACTION SUSPENDED
MEMBERS INSTRUCTED TO WORK NORMALLY

3rd March 2020

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you and your colleagues for the resolute action and clear solidarity you have shown throughout this dispute. No one can question the clear determination and true spirit you have continued to show whilst facing a company hell bent on destroying your industry.

As you are aware, further action was called in defence of the Role of the Guard and to force the company to get around the table and finally negotiate. I have now received a report from our Lead Officer who has indicated that further talks are planned to take place on Friday 6th March 2020. In order to allow these talks to progress and continue the Lead Officer is recommending the action is suspended.

The union, your negotiators and of course you the members have always wanted a negotiated settlement, we have been forced into taking industrial action by managements stubbornness. So yet again we are giving SWR management the opportunity to enter into serious discussion to resolve this dispute without industrial action being in place. We have suspended the industrial action in good faith and hope this is reciprocated in the talks. We hope that with the new management team in place constructive progress will ensue.

Therefore, to ensure talks progress and to allow negotiations to continue the NEC has decided to suspend the industrial action.

You and your colleagues are instructed to work normally and to book on for your shifts as normal.

Once again, the determination of you and your colleagues is a true inspiration to the trade union movement. It is vital that these talks finally see a safe and secure railway for every passenger. We cannot allow the company to put profit before safety. I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will provide further details on the outcome of discussions once the meetings have taken place.

NO TO DOO!
SAFETY BEFORE PROFIT!

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
