Role of the Guard & Extension of DOO – South Western Railway

Our Ref: BR2/0146

7th February 2019

Dear Colleague,

Role of the Guard & Extension of DOO – South Western Railway

Further to my earlier correspondence, firstly, I would like to congratulate you on what can only be described as a truly amazing ballot result in the principled stand on fighting to retain a second safety critical guard on every train. As you are aware, this is the fourth time we have had to re-ballot you and for you to return such a result yet again is unbelievable. The result you and your colleagues have returned is phenomenal and sends management a clear message that we remain united in our fight against DOO.

The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and has congratulated you and your colleagues on returning a yes vote in this historic fourth ballot. Therefore, to put more pressure on the company the NEC has instructed all our South Western Railway Guard, Commercial Guard and Train Driver members to take to take industrial action by not booking on for any shifts that commence between:-

• 0001 hours and 2359 hours on Friday 22nd February 2019
• 0001 hours and 2359 hours on Saturday 9th March 2019
• 0001 hours and 2359 hours on Saturday 16th March 2019

Furthermore, I will be contacting the company to seek an urgent meeting to discuss the outcome of our ballot and to demand the company now guarantee a guard on every train. The company can have no doubt that you and your colleagues are serious about defending the Safety Critical Role of the Guard, especially after a fourth successive ballot. Additionally, the NEC has instructed me to make preparations for a demonstration outside the Chinese Embassy to protest against the holding company.

I urge you all to continue to stand shoulder to shoulder during the upcoming days of strike action. We cannot allow this company to continue with their corrosive plans to dilute rail safety and put their profits before public safety and accessibility. We will not allow South Western Railway to bulldoze through their unnecessary plans for DOO.

I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will inform you of any further developments on this issue when they arise.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
