ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

Our Ref: BR2/0146

13th June 2018

TO ALL SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY GUARDS, COMMERCIAL GUARDS AND TRAIN DRIVERS

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

I am writing in relation to the above matter and further to my letter of 11th June 2018, as you are aware I received correspondence from Andy Mellors, which was recently put before our National Executive Committee to consider the contents.

After careful consideration the NEC has expressed their disappointment at the company’s letter and that management are not willing to meet with the union as they believe industrial action is a pre-condition to any talks. Therefore the NEC has confirmed that the planned industrial action remains on. As a way of reminder, you and your colleagues are instructed to take industrial action by not booking on for any shifts that commence between:-

• 0001 Hours on Thursday 21st June 2018 until 2359 Hours on Saturday 23rd June 2018

I have written to the company again to express our disappointment at their position and that the union are still willing to meet to try and find a meaningful resolution to this dispute.

It is the union’s firm belief that a deal can be done and an agreement reached like we have on other TOCs. We have informed the company that we believe it is imperative that SWR meet with the union before the dates of the strike action to try and find a resolution to this dispute which will allow us to suspend any industrial action.

I urge you and your colleagues to continue with your steadfast support and to stand shoulder to shoulder against the company’s plans to introduce DOO on the network. We must force the company to start taking our concerns seriously and to get around the table with honest intentions.

I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will write to you again in due course.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
