DON’T LET MANAGEMENT MUDDY THE WATERS – STAND FIRM

14th February 2018

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD AND EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAYS

Further to previous correspondence I understand management has been sending out copious amounts of correspondence to you trying to confuse the situation and scare you with a lot of legal jargon. In fact you can tell that some of their letters to members have been drawn up and written by their solicitors to try and undermine legitimate industrial action.

Management sent you a copy of a letter sent to me on the 19th December which is a prime example of the difficulties unions and its members have to deal with to take lawful industrial action. Despite SWR’s endeavours to muddy the waters the action the National Executive Committee has called is legal and we are asking members to stand firm and support it. If the company put as much effort into resolving this dispute as they did running to their lawyers then we would not be in this position.

In my email to you on 7th February I informed you that I had told management that we would vigorously defend any illegal deductions from members pay and this is still the case.

I am asking all members to support the action called for the coming weekend and defend the safety role of the Guard against this aggressive stance taken by the new franchise owners. After all, the previous owners had no difficulty in giving us the assurances we are seeking here and in fact were supportive of your very important role.

SUPPORT THE INDUSTRIAL ACTION SUPPORT YOUR COLLEAGUES SUPPORT YOUR UNION

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash General Secretary
