Dear Colleague

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO - SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

Further to my previous correspondence with regards to the above matter, I can now advise you that a meeting has been held to review both 701 documents and I have received an update report from the Regional Organiser, indicating that our Guard/Retail Company Council Reps are in agreement with the documents. The Regional Organiser also recommends that the Union agrees to the principles agreements, to allow the roll out of training and 701 units across South Western Railway.

The matter has been considered by the union’s National Executive Committee who has indicated that it is encouraging to finally have completed documents around the introduction of this new rolling stock and it is a testament to the diligent work of our Company Council Representatives, that despite the company’s best attempts, we have a coherent set of principles and more importantly, our members jobs and terms are protected.

Furthermore, it is a testament to the resolve of our Guards Company Council in ensuring that Guards retain control of the doors where possible, despite the company’s reluctance and their attempts to remove those responsibilities.

Therefore, the Executive Committee has instructed me to write to SWR informing them of our agreement to the principles set out in the documents.

I trust this keeps you fully advised on the matter and I will, of course, update you on any further developments.

Yours sincerely

Michael Lynch
