ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

To All SWR Guards, Commercial Guards & Train Driver Members

Our Ref: BR2/0146

17th January 2019

Dear Colleague

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

Further to my letter dated the 27th December 2018 where I informed you that SWR were showing signs of progressing in the right direction and that the RMT were awaiting proposals from the company. Regrettably, I now write to advise you that the company has again failed to provide clear guarantees on the Safety Critical Role of the Guard and failed to provide their latest proposals that guarantee a second safety critical member of staff on board every train.

Therefore, your union’s National Executive Committee has recently considered the matter and taken the decision to re ballot all our SWR Guard, Commercial Guard and Train Driver members so that we can continue with the action. As you are aware, because of the changes in the 2016 Trade Union Act it has become necessary to re-ballot you and your colleagues for industrial action.

Your union is asking you to return a massive YES vote just as you did in the previous three ballots to help your union keep up the fight to defend the Safety Critical Role of the Guard and stop the extension of DOO on South Western Railway. Only by returning a massive YES vote can we heap more pressure on management and bring this dispute to a speedy resolve.

The ballot for industrial action will open on Thursday 24th January 2019. Ballot papers will be sent to your home address shortly after this date and I urge you to vote YES for STRIKE ACTION and YES for INDUSTRIAL ACTION SHORT OF A STRIKE when you receive your voting paper. Do not waste your vote. If you have not received your ballot paper by Wednesday 30th January 2019 please contact the RMT Helpline on 0800 376 3706 and request a replacement voting paper. Alternatively, you may wish to contact RMT Head Office Reception on 0207 387 4771 and ask for the Industrial Relations Department.

MAKE SURE YOU USE YOUR VOTE
VOTE YES TO BOTH QUESTIONS

Best wishes.

Mick Cash
General Secretary
