ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

To All SWR Guard, Commercial Guard & Train Driver Members

Our Ref: BR2/0146

24th February 2020

Dear Colleague

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

RMT CALLS FURTHER STRIKE ACTION

Further to my letter dated the 24th January 2020 with regards to the above dispute, I can now advise you that a meeting has been held with our SWR Guard Representatives, General Secretary, Senior Assistant General Secretary and members of the union’s National Executive Committee to discuss the recent industrial action and our strategy going forward. During open, honest and protracted discussions it was the general consensus from those in attendance at the meeting that the action taken to date has been successful and our SWR Guard members remain resolute in continuing with the industrial action.

You and your colleagues have proved time and again how determined you are to win one of the Union’s longest running disputes. Our SWR Guard members have shown an incredible amount of solidarity and voted for industrial action for an historic sixth time. We must continue our fight against the company’s plans to extend DOO and we must continue to put pressure on SWR.

I am appalled by management’s bullying and harassment tactics in their attempt to get you and your colleagues to return to work. The company’s constant barrage of lengthy letters every time our Guard members take legal and legitimate industrial action is intimidating, degrading, humiliating and offensive. The RMT will not tolerate our members being bullied or intimidated by any company at any time whether we are in dispute or not.

Therefore, I have taken up these concerns with the Managing Director of First Group and MTR and I will keep you advised on developments. In addition, I have taken up the matter with the RMT Parliamentary Group and I have also written to our Sister Unions and Trade Councils seeking their solidarity and support.

With all of the above in mind, your union’s National Executive Committee has taken the decision to call further strike action in defence of the safety critical role of the Guard. Therefore, our South Western Railway Guard, Commercial Guard and Train Driver members are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between:

10.00 hours on Monday 9th March 2020 until 09.59 hours on Tuesday 10th March 2020

10.00 hours on Thursday 12th March 2020 until 09.59 hours on Friday 13th March 2020

Once again, I would like to thank you and your colleagues for standing shoulder to shoulder throughout this long and difficult dispute and I urge you to continue your steadfast determination in opposing SWR plans to extend DOO by supporting the above action.

UNITY IS STRENGTH
SUPPORT THE ACTION
NO TO DOO

Best wishes

Mick Cash
General Secretary
