STRIKE ACTION REMAINS ON
ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY
As I advised you in my letter yesterday, I was seeking a number of assurances from South Western Railway. The Company has responded but the letter I received today falls way below our expectations. We can see no reasons as to why the union should call off any strike action. It is very odd that the company’s negotiating team and Andy Mellor’s are often providing contradicting positions and are changing their minds on certain decisions. This latest offer is a rehashed proposal that has been rejected by the union on a number of occasions. It was not even discussed at the recent ACAS talks.
Management believe that their latest proposals were the same as those proposed by Greater Anglia. However, that is not the case, as Greater Anglia guaranteed a Guard on every train where there is an existing Guard and that there would be no extension to their DOO Routes. It is a shame that SWR has decided to cherry pick parts of another agreement to try and make a patchwork deal for you and your colleagues.
I have informed the company that as always the union is still willing to talk under the auspices of ACAS and are willing to enter into meaningful discussions to find a resolution to this dispute. However, your union is not willing to call off the 8 days of Strike action. The union has called off action in the past in good faith to allow talks to progress, but, SWR have totally failed to provide any meaningful proposals to resolve this dispute. I have urged the company to enter into meaningful discussions with the union and provide an offer that will resolve this dispute.
I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will inform you of any further developments on this issue when they arise.
