ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

To all South Western Railway Commercial Guards, Guards and Train Drivers

Our Ref: BR2/0146

31st March 2020

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

As you are aware, SWR has been seeking to agree a 4 year pay deal for train Drivers employed by the company. The RMT has rejected the offer. Part of the offer has a direct impact on the role and safety responsibilities of Guards by trying to reach agreement on Diver Controlled Operation.

This is a disgraceful attempt by the company to use the current unprecedented situation the country finds itself in to undermine the Guards dispute and our continuing fight to retain a safety critical Guard on every train. Most of the companies where we have negotiating rights are working with the Unions to ensue services are kept running, especially for Key Workers, but SWR see it as an opportunity to undermine the Guards role and increase profits. This is a disgraceful and abhorrent manipulation at a time when so many people are pulling together especially in the railway industry.

I have written to the company in the most strident of terms and enclose a copy of my letter to management for your information.

I will keep you advised of developments and in the meantime I hope you, your family and friends remain safe and well at these difficult times.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash

General Secretary
