Dear colleague

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY

I’d like to send the warmest of thanks and congratulations to you and your colleagues for taking part in the latest series of strikes. This action is having a major effect on the services provided by South Western Railway and the company is coming under heavy pressure as a result. Your magnificent show of solidarity and strength is a great example to not only your fellow members of the RMT but of the entire trade union movement.

This is no doubt the reason why the company has agreed to enter ACAS talks to look at meaningful discussions that will lead to the resolution to this dispute.

At the moment, however, the strike action planned for this Saturday 4th August remains on and the action will only be reconsidered if progress is made in the talks.

I will of course keep you advised of any developments which arise in the ACAS discussions, but, in the meantime, I’d like to once again thank you on behalf of every member of the RMT for the principled stand you are taking to defend the safety critical role of the guard.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
