Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & EXTENSION OF DOO – GREATER ANGLIA

Firstly, I would like to thank you and your colleagues for the determination and support you have shown each other and the union during this dispute. The union is only as strong as its members and you have all proven that in your steadfast commitment to defending passenger safety, access and the Guard Role.

I am writing further to my previous correspondence where I advised you of the referendum that was taking place on the offer from Greater Anglia which guaranteed the Safety Critical Role of the Guard. Please be advised that the referendum has now closed and the results are as follows:-

Are you prepared to accept the company’s offer?

Total Votes Cast: 167
Total Voting Yes: 151
Total Voting No: 16

Our dispute with Greater Anglia has been a long running and hard fought battle to retain the Safety Critical Role of the Guard on the network and the result you have delivered has achieved this aim. I would like to congratulate you and your colleagues for your phenomenal support and clear solidarity in the face of adversity throughout this dispute. The action you have all taken has shown the rest of the trade union movement what can be achieved through the power of solidarity, an organised workforce and solid industrial action. You have all demonstrated a courageous defiance against the company’s original proposals, which has enabled us to achieve this result.

The offer you and your colleagues have accepted has sent a statement to other Train Operating Companies that a deal can be done that guarantees a second safety critical person on the network. As you are aware, the fight against DOO was not exclusive to Greater Anglia and unfortunately the fight is still ongoing on a number of companies. I am sure you will all continue to support our Guard colleagues across the network. Our South Western Railway Guards and Commercial guards are due to take over eight days of industrial action in order to force SWR to Guarantee the Safety Critical Role of the Guard. I urge you all to support our colleagues by attending protests and supporting the pickets. Additionally, you can contribute to the National DOO Disputes fund and help alleviate any hardship our brother and sisters may be experiencing during the industrial action. If you wish to donate to our DOO Disputes fund you can do so by clicking this link:- www.rmt.org.uk. Alternatively, you can ring our Freephone helpline, cheques can also be made out to the RMT National Disputes Fund.

Once again I would like to thank and congratulate you all on this tremendous victory and I am in no doubt that you will continue to support the union in their fight for the guard on other TOCs.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
