ROLE OF THE GUARD & INTRODUCTION OF DOO – WEST MIDLANDS TRAINS

Our Ref: BR2/0146

14th November 2019

Dear Colleague,

ROLE OF THE GUARD & INTRODUCTION OF DOO – WEST MIDLANDS TRAINS

The union has been in discussions with West Midlands Trains management to try and find a meaningful resolution to this dispute. A meeting was held where a memorandum of understanding was produced to allow for further discussions to take place. A meeting was then held on Tuesday 12th November 2019 and was attended by your SCCC and LLC representatives. The discussions were based on the memorandum of understanding, however, it was unanimously agreed by your representatives that the company’s offer falls short of our aspirations.

The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and acknowledged the views of your representatives. The mandate in the recent ballot from you and your colleagues is clear that we must defend the Role of the Conductor. We will not allow the company to put profit before safety. We will not allow management to push through a needless plan for DOO/DCO and put safety at risk. Passengers clearly want a safety critical conductor on their trains and we must do everything possible to ensure a safety critical conductor remains on the West Midlands Trains network.

Therefore, the strike action called remains on. I urge you all to stand shoulder to shoulder and show management that we are serious in our commitment to the Conductor grade. We have to leave the company with no doubt that their senseless plans to introduce the dangerous method of driver only operation is not viable and we will not stand for it.

I will write to advise you of any further developments when they arise.

No to DOO!
Unity is Strength!
Support the Action!

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash
General Secretary
