ROLE OF THE GUARD & INTRODUCTION OF DOO

To All WMT Conductor, Conductor Instructor and Train Driver Members

Our Ref: BR2/0146
9th October 2019

Dear Colleague

ROLE OF THE GUARD & INTRODUCTION OF DOO
WEST MIDLAND TRAINS
RMT SERVES NOTICE OF THE BALLOT FOR INDUSTRIAL ACTION

Further to my letter dated the 4th October 2019 with regards to the above matter, regrettably I write to advise you that we are still no further in reaching a settlement on this very important dispute. Despite the best efforts of your Senior Union Representatives, management are showing no sign of shifting from their plans to introduce Driver Only Operation and to eradicate the safety critical role of the Guard. We cannot allow this to happen.

Furthermore, it has been brought to my attention that West Midland Trains are sending out vacancies for positions that require the applicant to have ‘knowledge of Driver Only Operation and Selective Door Operation’. The RMT is appalled by this latest attempt from management in their bid to push ahead with DOO. The RMT will not be hoodwinked into thinking WMT has intentions of seeking a sensible resolution to this dispute whilst blatantly carrying out these actions.

Therefore, your union’s National Executive Committee has again considered the matter and has taken the decision to commence an immediate ballot of all our WMT Conductor, Conductor Instructor and Train Driver members for industrial action. The ballot will open on Wednesday 16th October 2019 and will close on Thursday 31st October 2019.

If you have not received your ballot paper by Tuesday 22nd October 2019 please contact the RMT Helpline on 0800 376 3706 or Head Office on 0207 387 4771 and request a replacement voting paper. It is imperative that we get a massive return in the ballot so we are not prevented from acting on members’ wishes by the new ballot thresholds.

I urge you not to waste your vote when you receive your ballot paper and to vote ‘YES’ FOR STRIKE ACTION AND ‘YES’ FOR INDUSTRIAL ACTION SHORT OF A STRIKE to get management to produce a safe and sensible proposal, meet our demands to maintain the safety critical role of the Guard and guarantee us there will be no introduction of DOO.

Best wishes.
