SUNDAY WORKING, DRIVERS – GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY
Further to my letter dated the 22nd May 2019 with regards to the above matter and where I informed you that the RMT will be entering into discussions with Great Western Railway over the issue of Sunday working for our Driver members. I can now advise you that a meeting was held on the 24th May 2019 where the following two options were discussed:
• Sunday in the working week with a maximum of 17 Sundays. The equivalent payment would be consolidated into the base salary.
• Sunday in the working week with a reduction in the overall week to 32 hours.
I have received an update report from the Lead Officer indicating that very little progress was made at the meeting on the issue of Sunday Working. The company dismissed option one due to the cost implications and additional headcount this would entail and expressed their reluctance on option two on the basis of cost. However, the Lead Officer reports that the company has committed to undertake a full costing review arising from the points raised during these negotiations. Therefore, further meetings will take place on this issue and the Lead Officer will report back on developments, as and when they arise.
The matter has been considered by your union’s National Executive Committee who notes that very little progress was made at the meeting held on the 24th May 2019 and that further meetings will take place. The Executive Committee also notes that the Lead Officer will report back future developments.
I trust this keeps you fully advised on the matter and I will, of course, keep you informed on developments.
