SUSPENSION FROM DUTY, B FREDERICK, TRAIN MANAGER – GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY
I am writing in relation to the above matter and following the horrendous treatment of our Brother Ben Frederick. It is utterly shameful that the company has now dismissed our member for defending himself. As you are aware, Ben was subject to violent, abusive and racist behaviour from a passenger. This action from the company can only cause the union to assume that Great Western Railway accepts this sort of violent and racist behaviour.
The abhorrent and appalling situation Ben has experienced is never acceptable and the union will now do everything possible to ensure Ben is fully reinstated to his substantive role and that all our members are protected from this sort of action. I have informed the company that this union now demands that the company provide a commitment to the union that our members who suffer abuse and assaults from members of the public are protected.
The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and has instructed me to now proceed with the ballot of our Paddington Drivers and Train Managers for Industrial Action. Therefore, to ensure a swift ballot, I urge you all to ensure your membership details are correct in preparation for any ballot.
