Suspension of RMT Representatives, Fratton - South Western Railway

Our Ref: BR2/14/2

To All South Western Railway Members

6th August 2020

Dear Colleague,

Suspension of RMT Representatives, Fratton - South Western Railway

As you may be aware, our long standing representative Mark Gamble was dismissed from employment following an out of workplace incident. Due to the draconian anti-trade union laws we are unable to take lawful industrial action in support of our Brother. Mark was at the appeal stage of his disciplinary and regrettably the hearing officer has upheld the decision to dismiss our RMT Company Council Representative. The treatment of our brother has been nothing short of disgusting and the company has taken every opportunity to target a hard working rep.

The outcome of this decision has also had serious ramifications on events advertised in the depot. South Western Railway now claims that any event advertised within their property is classed as a legitimate SWR business activity. This obviously has huge implications on all Trade Unions who use the boards within the depots to advertise events, as the company is trying to claim these as official SWR events.

The National Executive Committee has considered this issue and is appalled at the treatment of our Brother and has instructed me to seek a director’s review of the dismissal. Due to the company’s approach to events, the NEC has asked me to advise members to be mindful of attending any event that is advertised within a SWR depot. Furthermore, I will be contacting the other trade unions who operate within SWR to form a joint approach to deal with this problem.

I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will inform you of any further developments when they arise.

Yours Sincerely,

RMT Union
