USE OF AGENCY STAFF – SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY
A number of Branches have come forward with concerns over South Western Railway’s use of agency workers. There are concerns over the safety of the railway and the potential damage to long standing agreements. SWR are exploiting agency workers offering zero-hour contracts and creating a two-tier workforce which is having a detrimental impact to safety and all staff involved. The union has a clear policy on ensuring agency staff are brought in-house and would like for these workers to be directly employed.
The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and has welcomed the resolution and sentiments from our Branches. The NEC has acknowledged that it is clear SWR are overusing agency staff and that it is becoming an increasing problem to safety and other day to day tasks.
Therefore, the NEC has asked for all Branches with South Western Railway members to provide feedback on how you and your colleagues within SWR feel about the overuse of agency staff and what action – if any – you would want the union or yourselves to take on this matter. I would be most grateful if you could contact your Branch Secretary to find out when this item will be discussed at the next branch meeting, so you can attend and share your views. I will place all responses from our Branches back before the NEC for further consideration.
I trust this keeps you fully advised and I will inform you of any further developments on this issue when they arise.
