WALKING TIME, TRAIN MANAGERS, EDINBURGH WAVERLEY – CROSS COUNTRY
Your union has been involved in negotiations with Cross Country over the matter of walking time for you and your colleagues at Edinburgh Waverley. As you know, Train Managers at Waverley had been given only six minutes walking time, while drivers had eight minutes.
During these negotiations a manager actually timed this walk and it took over 9 minutes, thus your negotiators requested a 10-minute walk time, which would make sense in you providing a timely service and be in line with agreements which have been in place since British Rail days.
I should also mention that management had come up with the absurd suggestion that they would issue guidance to staff on how to walk. Such a suggestion is both unacceptable and ridiculous and shows the patronising attitude management have towards staff.
Your negotiators had believed that progress was being made during the avoidance of dispute process, but no response to your union’s requests for an agreement on this matter has materialised.
I have therefore advised Cross Country that a dispute situation exists between our organisations and the ballot for industrial action of you and your Train Manager colleagues at Edinburgh Waverley will open on Tuesday 20th August 2019.
I am sure that when you receive your ballot papers next week you will deliver a message to management that they cannot treat you with contempt and that our members only want what agreements say they are entitled to.
So please look out for your voting papers and ensure you vote YES for both strike action and industrial action short of a strike.
If you do not receive your ballot paper by Tuesday 27th August, then contact the union’s freephone Helpline on 0800 376 3706 to request a replacement.
