Seafarers union, RMT today paid tribute to the historic contribution of merchant navy Ratings to the economy, security and maritime traditions of all nations in the UK.
RMT General Secretary, Mick Lynch said: “It is an honour to lead the trade union that represents merchant navy seafarers at work today from the northern isles of Scotland to the seas of the south Atlantic.
"Seafarer Ratings are the backbone of maritime, and I pay tribute to the memories of the thousands of seafarers who gave their lives to protect and preserve these islands down the years.
"RMT continue to work to increase jobs and training of UK Ratings in every sector of the merchant shipping industry as the most direct means of honouring the maritime traditions founded in working class communities.”
