RMT Press Office:
RMT has written to Network Rail today (Thursday September 21, 2023) regarding allegations of the use of agency workers in violation of the law in order to undermine a strike.
Union members at a Cardiff depot were on strike for 12 hours this week in a dispute over the imposition of rosters.
However, it has been brought to the union’s attention that Network Rail had allegedly used agency workers to cover the role of Controller of Site Safety, which is totally illegal under current legislation.
In a letter to Network Rail, RMT general secretary Mick Lynch wrote: “Your organisation will be well-aware that such practices were ruled unlawful by the High Court in a widely publicised judgement made on July 13, 2023.
“We regard this as a serious escalation to the dispute.
“I urge you to seek a negotiated settlement to this dispute, rather than stooping to this level, which undermines our discussions.”
