No more excuses for Scottish Government

RMT Press Office:

No more excuses for Scottish Government not to take rail services into public ownership says RMT, following decision by Welsh Government to nationalise rail operations.

RAIL UNION RMT says that the announcement by the Welsh Labour government today that it is to take rail passenger services into public ownership means that there should now be no more excuses for the Scottish Government not to take similar action.

The Welsh Government has used its powers to appoint a public operator to run rail services as a result of the private rail operator’s failure to meet its contractual obligations due to the massive drop in passenger numbers caused by Covid–19.

The Scottish Government has far greater devolved rail powers than the Welsh Government over rail services but has refused to take action to bring Scottish rail passenger services into public ownership.

Instead they have chosen to support ScotRail and the Caledonian Sleeper with emergency funding measures which allow these companies to carry on making profits on the backs of the tax payer and passengers.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said,

“The announcement by the Welsh Labour Government that it is to take passenger rail services into public ownership is welcome.

“There should now be no more excuses for the Scottish Government, who have greater powers than the Welsh government over rail services, not to take similar action.

“The failure of privately operated ScotRail and the Caledonian Sleeper to meet their contractual obligations due to the drop in passenger numbers caused by Covid–19 means the Scottish Government has the power to appoint a public operator of last resort to take rail services into public ownership.

“Instead it has chosen to use the extra public funding necessary to support railways in Scotland at this difficult time to be delivered through Emergency Measures Agreements that allow these companies to carry on making profits on the backs of the tax payer and passengers.

“The Scottish government should act now to take rail services into public ownership.“
