I am writing to give you an update on the progress being made to protect jobs and services during the refranchising of the Northern and Transpennine Express franchises and to thank you for your steadfast support and activity throughout this campaign.
The response to the campaign has exceeded all expectations. RMT nationally have responded to the Department for Transport consultation, in addition to the 10,000+ postcards objecting to their proposals which we delivered to the DfT on 18th August. These postcards were completed across the North of England and collected through the 49 events which RMT organised (the DfT held just 5 events).
43 Members of Parliament have now signed Early Day Motion 174, please click here to view the EDM and see who has signed http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2014-15/174
We have produced a facility where you can still lobby your MP directly asking them to sign. Please visit bit.ly/1pdd0jy to request that your MP supports our demands. Even if your MP has already signed the EDM please use this tool to show the strength of feeling about the proposals.
Furthermore, we are now in regular contact with the 3,500 local councillors in the councils which make up Rail North and those which will be affected by its proposals. We are continuing to receive positive feedback from a significant number of councillors and we will continue to provide them with briefings and updates.
Thank you again for all your hard work. I will keep you informed of any developments.
Acting General Secretary
