Northern rail contractor staff to stage 48-hour strike over bullying and unfair treatment

18 September 2025

Rail union, RMT has called a 48-hour strike by members working for Carlisle Support Services on the Northern trains’ revenue and gateline contract.

The action follows reports of bullying and harassment by managers, including pressuring staff to break the strike, denying extra hours to union members, and forcing redeployments at short notice to remote locations.

With no serious offers from the company, RMT members will strike on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 October.

RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “Carlisle bosses are trying to bully staff into submission instead of negotiating a fair deal.

“Our members will not be intimidated by any employer.

“All our people want is respect, fair pay and decent conditions.

“The company need to get back to the table and make a decent offer.

"This whole episode underlines the need for all outsourcing on the railway to end and for all rail workers to be brought back in house into direct employment."

The union is pursuing a campaign to end outsourcing and hold the Labour government to its promise to undertake the biggest wave of insourcing in a generation.
