"Piper Alpha will always cast a long shadow over the North Sea and the global offshore oil and gas industry, serving as a constant reminder of the need for rigorous and continuously improving safety standards.
"We repeat our commitment to securing and enforcing those standards for the current generation of offshore workers. In doing so, we serve the memory of those who lost their lives in such appalling circumstances.
"Today we remember the 167 victims of this tragedy and stand with their families and loved ones on the anniversary of their loss. "
Steve Todd, RMT National Secretary said:
"RMT honour and respect the memory of those who perished in the North Sea on 6th July 1988. We also pay tribute to the families, loved ones and colleagues left behind in such painful circumstances.
"The lessons learned from this catastrophic incident should never be forgotten or downgraded."
