Rail union RMT confirms two major events on Merseyside

21 July 2016

RMT Press Office:

Campaign to defend Martin Zee and fight over Driver Only Operation.

RAIL UNION RMT has confirmed two key dates as the union mobilise members in defence of guards under attack in the Merseyside area:

Justice for Martin Zee – July 25

Merseyrail Guard Martin Zee has been charged by the British Transport Police for allegedly causing injury by – essentially – simply doing his job by opening the train doors. RMT is defending Martin against this absurd but serious charge.

RMT has called a solidarity demonstration to coincide with the start of Martin’s trial on Monday, July 25 outside the Queen Elizabeth Law Courts, Derby Square, Liverpool, L2  1XA, starting at 09:00.

Say NO to D.O.O. – keep Merseyrail safe - July 28

After months of campaigning against Merseytravel plans to abolish the guard grade on Merseyrail, RMT will be presenting its case to members of the Merseytravel Committee on July 28, supported by Aslef, TSSA and the North West TUC.

RMT has called a lobby of the Merseytravel Committee on Thursday, July 28 outside No 1 Mann Island, Liverpool L3 1BP, starting at 08:15.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;

“RMT has called two important events on Merseyside next week in defence of our member Martin Zee and in opposition to the moves towards Driver Only Operation on Merseyrail.

“Both of these events have a common thread and that is the persistent threat to the guards grade on our railways.

“The union is mobilising from across the labour and trade union movement and support from members of the public would be warmly welcomed as well.”
