RMT backs Labour commitment to offshore jobs

1 October 2025

RMT Press Office:

RMT today welcomed Labour’s commitment to legislate for more and better jobs in the offshore supply chain.

Labour Energy Secretary Ed Miliband told Party delegates meeting in Liverpool that the government planned to introduce a new Fair Work Charter that would close loopholes and ensure fair wages and trade union rights in the offshore sector.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that the union had been campaigning for many years to expose this void in legislation which had actively encouraged exploitative practices in supply chains and made it uncompetitive for local seafarers to gain employment.

“The Tories hoodwinked the country when they only extended the National Minimum Wage to the oil and gas supply chain in 2020.

“Closing that loophole in offshore wind is the essential basis for wider reforms that can deliver thousands more seafarer and offshore energy jobs that would otherwise be denied to our maritime communities.

“RMT strongly welcomes this announcement which will benefit our members at work where it matters,” he said.
