RMT call to oppose job cuts at Trump Turnberry

RMT call to oppose job cuts at Trump Turnberry

21 August 2020

RMT Press Office:

Trump Turnberry Union RMT is today calling on the Scottish Government to intervene and condemn the Trump Organisation’s savage cuts to jobs and terms and conditions at its Turnberry resort in Ayrshire.

The company is planning to bulldoze through over  80 redundancies alongside damaging cuts to sick, pay, working hours, pay enhancements, staff benefits and working conditions. Formal consultation on the plans is now over and despite strong RMT representations the Trump operation has shown no sign of backing down and has in fact ratcheted up the cuts.

The company claims that it is being forced to make these cuts because of the impact of Covid-19 on visitor numbers, yet across the UK, there is a clear trend towards domestic staycations. Instead, RMT believes that the Trump organisation is shamelessly using the global pandemic as a guise for slashing terms and conditions of workers in Scotland.

RMT’s letter to the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, will urge the Scottish Government to intervene as a matter of urgency and condemn the Trump Organisation’s disgraceful treatment of Scottish workers and support the RMT’s campaign to protect all jobs and conditions at the Trump Turnberry resort.

RMT Senior Assistant General Secretary Mick Lynch said:

“It has been clear from the outset that the company is hell-bent on cutting jobs and slashing terms and conditions, under the guise of Covid-19, while at the same time as being in receipt of British Taxpayer’s money in the form of furlough payments.

It is disgraceful that the Trump Organisation is ploughing ahead with these outrageous cuts, when it is clear that the real goal is casualising the workforce, with no regard for its dedicated employees.

With deadline for the consultation over job losses looming this Sunday, RMT is calling for the Scottish Government to take action to protect these workers livelihoods from their employer’s shameful plans.

RMT has written to the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, to call on her Government to support the RMT’s campaign to protect all jobs and conditions at the Turnberry resort and to ensure that our members are protected.”

Stop the Job Cuts at Trump Turnberry

RMT is stepping up the fight to protect our members jobs and working conditions at Trump's flagship Scottish Turnberry golf operation as the close of the formal consultation looms large.

RMT letter to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reads:

“Dear Nicola,

Proposed redundancies at Trump Turnberry Resort

I am writing to you to raise serious concerns about the Trump Organisation’s plans to cut jobs and significantly worsen terms and conditions at the Trump Turnberry Resort, and to call on the Scottish Government to support the RMT’s campaign against this attack on Scottish workers.

You may already be aware that the company is planning to make in the region of 80 staff redundant, alongside savage cuts to sick pay, working hours, pay enhancements, staff benefits and working conditions.

Throughout the consultation, the RMT has been unequivocal in our opposition to the proposals and the company’s plans for compulsory redundancies, yet these have been ignored by the Trump Organisation at every stage. At the same time, the company has been in receipt of large amounts of British Taxpayers’ money via the Job Retention Scheme. The Trump Organisation is now making a mockery of the scheme with its plans to make redundant a large number of staff for whom it received furlough payments.

The company claims that it is being forced to make these cuts because of the impact of Covid-19 on visitor numbers, yet across the UK, there is a clear trend towards domestic holidays. Therefore, we believe that it totally unnecessary for the company to make these cuts, and that the Trump Organisation is shamelessly using the global pandemic as a guise for slashing terms and conditions of workers in Scotland.

In light of these issues, I am urging the Scottish Government to intervene as a matter of urgency to condemn the Trump Organisation’s disgraceful treatment of Scottish workers and support the RMT’s campaign to protect all jobs and conditions at the Trump Turnberry resort.

I look forward to hearing from you on this important matter and would be happy to discuss these issues in more detail.

Yours Sincerely,

Mick Cash  General Secretary”
