RMT Press Office:
RMT calls for clarification from Government and Arriva Northern as Tory MP says “we will not have guard less trains” amid increasing political opposition to driver only trains in the North.
RMT is calling clarification from the Government and Arriva Northern as a Tory MPs says “we will not have guard less trains” as political opposition to driver only trains increases in the North.
In a letter to a constituent seen by RMT Trudy Harrison, Conservative MP for Copeland, says guards will be retained on trains that serve her constituency. In her letter she says:
“I am sure you were relieved to hear that we will not have guard less trains between Carlisle and Lancaster.”
The comment came as former Lib Dem leader Tim Farron, MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, signed a parliamentary motion supporting keeping guards on all trains.
RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said,
“As well as Labour we now have the former leader of the Liberal Party and a Tory MP supporting keeping guards on trains.
“We also need urgent clarification from Arriva North and the Government as to why a Tory MP in a marginal seat is saying guards will be retained for her services when no such assurances that we are aware of have been provided for MPs on other routes.
