RMT calls for levy on record rolling stock company profits

2 October 2026

RMT Press Office:

RAIL union RMT called for a levy on rolling stock companies today (October 2) as new figures exposed record dividend payments and seven figure salaries.

The three main rolling stock companies (ROSCOs) who own over 70 per cent of Britain’s trains Angel, Eversholt and Porterbrook paid out a record £390 million in dividends to their shareholders in 2025.

At the same time the three chief ROSCO executives pocketed £3.4 million between them in just one year.

In total, the ROSCOs have paid out £2.4 billion over the last 10 years and £3.4 billion since 2010. On average, over the last five years, the three ROSCOs have paid out £240 million each year in dividends.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that greedy train owners were raking it in while passengers were paying the price.

“The government’s commitment to explore publicly owned rolling stock for the new trains in the future is welcome, but in a cost-of-living crisis we need action now.

“We are calling on the government to use this month’s budget to introduce a ‘cost of travel’ levy on profits to fund a 3.4 per cent fare cut, rather than watching the cash being salted away to offshore tax havens like the Cayman Islands,” he said.
