Scotland’s largest ferry union, RMT has called on all the SNP leadership candidates to rule out the breakup and privatisation of CalMac Ferries.
The former First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon had repeatedly provided ruled out privatisation or unbundling lifeline ferry services on the Clyde and Hebrides contract.
CalMac’s current contract expires in September 2024.
In a letter sent to all the leadership candidates, RMT general secretary Mick Lynch wrote:
“I am writing to you as an SNP leadership candidate to ask that you pledge your support for the following measures to protect and expand Scotland’s lifeline ferry services:
“Public ownership and operation of all vessels on publicly contracted ferry routes in Scotland.
“No tendering, privatisation or break up of ferry services provided by Caledonian MacBrayne.
“All key workers on Scotland’s ferries to have their terms and conditions agreed with the maritime trade unions.”
