RMT calls on South Western Railway to call off the bullying and start talking in Guards' safety dispute

RAIL UNION RMT today called on South Western Railway to call off the bullying and start talking after the company sent threatening and intimidating letters to individual union members suggesting that they will be making illegal deductions to the wages of staff to recoup losses arising from the current industrial dispute.

In a letter to SWR Managing Director Andy Mellors, reproduced in full below, RMT General Secretary Mick Cash says:

“I am writing to you to express my disgust and concern at the bullying and harassment of my members who are taking legal and legitimate industrial action.

You have sent a communication to all my Guards (and possibly my Driver members) which is threatening in tone and even goes so far as to suggest you will try and recoup company losses from individuals. This is a disgraceful stance to have taken and has echoes of the discredited tactics employed elsewhere, i.e. Southern (GTR). I would also add that we would vigorously defend any illegal deductions from my members pay.

It would be appropriate for me to remind you of your statement made on the 15th September 2017 ‘Please be assured we will fully respect the democratic process of the ballot and the outcome whatever that may be.’

I think it would also be appropriate to remind you of the ACAS’s definition of bullying and harassment ‘Bullying and harassment means any unwanted behaviour that makes someone feel intimidated, degraded, humiliated or offended’. Your communication is intimidating, degrading, humiliating and offensive.

I ask that it be withdrawn and an apology issued immediacy and that you stand by your commitment to respect the democratic process of the ballot.”

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:

“It is appalling that South Western Railway have sunk to the level of trying to harass and intimidate individual members of staff, staff who only a few months ago were heralded as heroes by the company in a publicity campaign, in an effort to undermine the solid, determined and united action to defend the guards and stop the creeping poison of driver only operation.

“South Western Railway should call off these disgraceful attacks on their front-line staff and should start talking seriously with the union around an agreement that underpins the guard guarantee and ensures safe, accessible and secure services for all.

“These dirty tricks will not weaken our resolve to fight for a railway that puts public safety before private profit.”
