RMT demands good conditions for offshore workers amid bumper industry profits

RMT Press Office:

Offshore workers union, RMT called for greater protections for staff following huge profits generated by private companies in the wind sector.

The STUC has revealed that 16,000 jobs were lost 2021 while big offshore energy companies produce high revenues and huge profits which are not retained in Scotland.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "The process for increasing wind capacity needs to ensure that jobs are protected, and local Scottish workers have the opportunity to work in the sector, receive decent training, good pay and proper conditions.

"No lease from Crown Estate Scotland or licence from Marine Scotland should be issued to offshore wind developers without these conditions in place.

"We need to end the scandal that crew in the offshore wind supply chain can be legally paid below the national minimum wage.

"These measures will help maximise the value of offshore wind farms to Scotland’s workers and improve the skills base for the entire economy."
