RMT Press Office:
RAIL UNION RMT today demanded urgent action over the failed deep clean of staff mess rooms on the COVID crisis-hit Great Western Railway.
GWR has already been hit by surging COVID rates amongst staff that had led to an amended timetable. The deep-clean was supposed to be part of the remedy to on-going issues but reports from the mess rooms by RMT members after the cleaning reveal the facilities to be in a poor state of hygiene.
Staff have already submitted "safe stop requests" which have the power to enforce a safe working environment and RMT has formally written to the company this morning demanding action and making it clear that the union will fully support members demanding a safe workplace as COVID rates surge
RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;
“Great Western Railway was already facing a COVID-19 crisis and our members are rightly concerned and angry about the failure of the remedial measures in the mess rooms. This is deadly serious.
“RMT is demanding action and will support any members demanding a safe workplace and submitting "safe stop requests" to protect themselves and their colleagues. This issue needs sorting out immediately without and excuses or any delays.”
