RMT hits back as Southern rip up recognition agreement

14 December 2016

RMT Press Office:

RMT hits back as Southern rip up recognition agreement to bar union from ACAS talks.

General Secretary Mick Cash said:

“The claim from Southern that they do not recognise RMT for the purposes of bargaining on behalf of drivers is just plain wrong. The agreement, “Bargaining Procedures 2006 – updated 2009”, is crystal clear. RMT is party to the agreement and is recognised. (attached)

“This isn’t about numbers, it’s about having all parties in the room working on a negotiated settlement. That is how the ACAS process works.  Southern have kicked the legs from under that process by barring RMT from today’s ACAS talks.

“RMT is being treated with complete and utter contempt and the travelling public will be appalled at this behaviour by a rail company that is out of control.”

Editors Notes:

Southern have recognised RMT for bargaining for drivers - in the last 7 years 2 RMT drivers have been elected as drivers local reps in a process where RMT and ASLEF drivers all took part, and Southern local management negotiated  with them as part of drivers union negotiating side which included both RMT and ASLEF members.
