RMT Press Office:

RMT is proud to launch "They Shall Not Pass," a new pamphlet detailing the untold story of seafarers and rail workers who fought fascism.

Jointly published with the International Brigade Memorial Trust (IBMT), this pamphlet uses archive material to reveal the extensive involvement of transport workers in battling British Union of Fascist leader Oswald Mosley and his Blackshirts in Britain and fighting fascism abroad in Spain.

Over 100 seafarers and rail workers volunteered for the International Brigades, fighting Nazi-backed forces while European governments looked the other way.

The pamphlet also highlights how NUR general secretary John Marchbank took on Mosley in the courts and humiliated him.

Mick Lynch, RMT General Secretary, said: “The bravery of these workers in the face of fascism is a story that deserves to be told.

"Their commitment and courage are an inspiration to us all.

"To honour the legacy of those before us who bravely fought fascism, we must also confront the far right today, ensuring that we continue to live in a society where basic democratic norms and freedoms are respected."
