RMT marks 25th anniversary of Hatfield rail disaster

17 October 2025

RMT Press Office:

Rail union RMT has today marked the 25th anniversary of the Hatfield rail disaster, which claimed four lives and left more than 70 people injured on 17 October 2000.

The crash, caused by a broken rail, became a defining moment for the industry and highlighted the dangers of cutting corners on safety and maintenance.

It also exposed the failings of a fragmented, profit-driven system of rail infrastructure management.

RMT said it was vital that the lessons of Hatfield continue to guide decision-making across the railway today, especially at a time when the industry is again under pressure to cut costs.

Eddie Dempsey, RMT General Secretary, said: “On the 25th anniversary of the Hatfield rail disaster, our thoughts are with the families, loved ones and colleagues of those who lost their lives and all who were injured.

"This tragedy was a turning point for the entire industry and is a stark reminder of the importance of putting safety first in everything we do.

"Rail workers know only too well the consequences when maintenance and safety standards are compromised.

"The lessons of Hatfield must never be forgotten and must continue to guide the way our railway is run today and in the future.”
