RAIL UNION RMT warned on the sixth anniversary of the Carmont rail tragedy today (Wednesday August 12) that the government and Network Rail needed to act on safety recommendations.
The report into the fatal derailment of a passenger train at Carmont, Aberdeenshire by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) made 20 recommendations for the improvement of railway safety including the better management of construction activities by Network Rail and its contractors.
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that the lack of action since Carmont, which was caused by a landslip during extreme weather, and Network Rail’s admission of culpability, its tardiness in addressing some of RAIB’s recommendations meant that there was a real possibility of a similar incident happening again.
“While we pause to remember the tragic deaths of the three who were killed, including RMT conductor member, Donald Dinnie, we need to ensure disasters like this don’t happen again,” he said.
