RMT Press Office:
RMT on alert for surge in passengers to coastal resorts this weekend.
RAIL UNION RMT said today that it is on red alert for a surge in passengers that may compromise COVID-19 safety protocols as millions are expected to head to the coast and other leisure attractions this weekend.
With the forecast for hot weather, at the peak of the holiday period, the union has raised fresh concerns over social distancing and the use of masks which could put staff at risk on the frontline of the transport network.
RMT Senior Assistant General Secretary Mick Lynch said;
"We know that train operators are expecting a surge in passengers this weekend from Blackpool to Southend, Brighton to Bournemouth and all of the ‎other UK tourist hot spots as temperatures are set to rise.
"RMT reps on the ground are on alert and will be advising our members of their rights and particularly their right to a safe working environment. It is important that the Public Health England COVID-19 safety standards are maintained at all times. The combination of sun and alcohol is a clear threat to that.
"RMT will take whatever action is required to protect the health and livelihoods of our members."
