RMT on Government mixed messaging on lockdown

RMT Press Office:

RMT says Government mixed messaging on lockdown has resulted in dangerous chaos on rail services to Bournemouth today

Rail union RMT said today that confused and conflicting messaging from Boris Johnson and his government has led to a huge surge in passengers and dangerous and predictable chaos on Cross Country services into Bournemouth today.

British Transport Police have had to be mobilised for crowd control and the sheer weight of numbers have forced the company to try and find additional‎ fleet as social distancing proves impossible. RMT has notified members of their right to refuse to work in clearly dangerous conditions and the union is monitoring the situation.

General Secretary Mick Cash said;

"The hopeless mixed messaging from the Government and the impact of the Cummings affair has resulted in predictable chaos on the railway today with Bournemouth at the eye of the storm. This is on Boris Johnson and he cannot shirk responsibility.

"RMT has warned that lifting the lockdown too quickly would soon result in chaos on our transport services and here you have it. This union will take whatever action is required to protect the health, safety and livelihoods of our members."
